Intro: Hainan it's geographically located in front of
Vietnam. The place where I was based, JinJiang, was a very small town in
the countryside. I have been told that the majority of the people have
never seen a foreigner in their life and as you can imagine I was a kind
of superstar in town. I had hundreds of eyes following me wherever I was
walking! Kids running after me, people calling friends to come out of
their houses to see me. I've visited Haikou (the province capital) and
Sanya, the chinese tropical destination by the sea. One disappointing
thing, even if I saw only 4 chinese provinces out of more than 20, they
look quite the same in the way the cities are constructed, their
buildings and shops. Of course the environment differs, having extended
nature including palm trees growing everywhere. The climate it's not
really that humid and tropical, but in fact very cold during the winter.
02 January - 2008 - New Year in Sanya - I just returned
from a quick trip to Sanya in Hainan Island, China. For those who still
ignore it, check the south east asia map and you'll see a kind of huge
island in front of Vietnam. They say it's the Chinese Hawaii...but I'd
say the hawaii made in China...although the place was fully packed with
Russians (wonder they can stand to sunbath at less than 20 degrees
celsius and swim in the very cold water). The place is mainly based on the russian tourism till the point that every shop's sign, after the chinese
name, has the russian translation and no english!! Moreover seeing
Chinese people speaking a some russian and zero english! Awful! By
the way, despite of the chilly climate, I swam every day, sun tan ,
built sand castles and watched the fireworks on the 31 night. Discovered
a nudist beach cramped only by old men and one solitary and scared white
russian teen girl in topless. Relaxing weekend.

Left, In Sanya for the new year, on the beach, chilling and
watching the fireworks! Oh, note that the chinese are crazy for
fireworks, they keep on firing firecrackers all year round taking every
occasion as an excuse, and at times just for fun.
